Let’s just say we don’t associate Portugal’s Douro Valley with Austria’s Grüner Veltliner, but the combination clearly works because this sparkling wine is fantastic. Rita Ferreira loves the grape so much; she planted it fifteen years ago at 600m elevation. Two years aging in the bottle and no dosage after disgorgement leads to a fresh, vibrant nose of green apples, kumquat, white pepper, and white flowers and a dry, acidic but weighty palate.
