  2. Elementary Library Series Volume V Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2016

Elementary Library Series Volume V Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2016

    $70.00
Just the fifth vintage of this refined Cabernet, which features a different work of art on the label each year. The project is run by Robin Ackhurst, winemaker at Apsara and Swanson, and engineer and passionate blender Brian Schmaltz. Designed to be an ageworthy expression of the vintage, this is a serious, dry, tannic wine with a dusty grip. Plenty of black fruits too, but it’s the texture of the wine where its deep, lasting appeal lies. One to hold – hence the “library collection.” Learn More
  3. Smoking Gun Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2014

Smoking Gun Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2014

94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot. Inspired by the Napa pioneers of the 19th century, this is a Cabernet that’s upfront, bold, and straight-talking, but with serious undertones. A smoky nose of black fruits, herbs, and spices goes into a palate that’s juicy and almost jammy, held together by smoothly firm tannins and lively acidity. A friendly, engaging wine with depth and lasting concentration. Learn More

“66% Merlot and 34% Cabernet Sauvignon from multiple sites … a rocking bouquet of plums, chocolate, scorched earth, and spice box, with an alluring mole-like character developing in the glass. It’s deep, rich, and powerful on the palate, yet has a forward, layered style as well as rocking purity, no hard edges, sweet tannins, and a great finish … one of the finest Merlot-dominated blends in the vintage” – Jeb Dunnock Learn More

Here’s a wine with some pedigree. Made by Will Harlan – son of Bill – from younger vines on the same vineyards used by Bond, Harlan, and Promontory (new Harlan project), this is a complex, ageworthy wine that’s already drinking beautifully. From the great 2013 vintage, the black fruit aromas are crunchy and irresistible, with cracked black pepper, licorice, and coffee, all held together by supple tannins. Learn More

Byron Kosuge wanted to make a Napa version of Beaujolais, so he grafted Gamay cuttings on to Pinot Noir vines at The Shop vineyard near Napa’s Carneros Resort & Spa in 2014. Light by red wine standards, strong by Gamay standards. Pretty but serious, with fresh, juicy aromas of raspberries, blackberries, pomegranates, peppercorns, roses, and dried herbs. Learn More

Genevieve Janssens, the recently retired head winemaker at Robert Mondavi, makes about 9 barrels of Portfolio each year in her garage, along with her husband Luc. In 2014 the blend consists of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon from block 8 at the Hendry Ranch in west Napa and 15% Cabernet Franc from Detert East up on the Oakville bench, part of the historic To Kalon vineyard. Deeply concentrated yet beautifully balanced, the wine exhibits sweet dark cherry and blackberry fruits along with a chocolate nutiness from 30 months aging in 100% new French oak.
