The Great Grape Study - MARSANNE
Back Room Wines’ "Great Grape Study," held on Thursday evenings throughout the year, is a study of the same grape made from different parts of the world and in different styles.
This is a very good way to gain greater appreciation for a grape.
The Great Grape Study on Thursday, June 26 turns to MARSANNE, the white grape of the Northern Rhone Valley that also flourishes in Australia, California and other parts.
We present a special twist to your great grape study this week. We pour you three Marsanne wines (2 Northern Rhones and 1 from Australia) and, for comparison, a Roussanne and a Viognier. By comparing Marsanne to its two "sister grapes, " (all probably were born in the Northern Rhone), we submit that you can understand its uniqueness. (Also, it's hard to find five Marsanne wines!)
Here's the MARSANNE (+Roussanne & Viognier) line-up:
YVES CUILLERON Marsanne "Les Vignes d'a Cote" Vin de France (Northern Rhone) 2012 $23
E. GUIGAL St. Joseph Blanc 2011 $38 (90% Marsanne, 10% Roussanne)
TAHBILK Marsanne "1927 Vines" Victoria, Australia 2005 $35
and for comparison...
J.L. CHAVE SELECTION St. Joseph Blanc 2011 $32 (100% Roussanne)
BODEGA RANCHO Viognier Santa Lucia Highlands 2012 $24
