Back in the late 1960s/early 1970s, UC Davis sold what they thought were cuttings of Pinot Blanc to local winemakers. However, they were actually Melon Blanc, a grape rarely planted outside Muscadet in the Loire. As a result, there are still plantings in Chalone, which is where Scott Schultz sources his grapes. This is a fascinating alternative to Muscadet: light, fresh, acidic, mouth-watering, textured, and saline. Drink with oysters.
