This Merlot from the mono-vineyard AVA of Cole Ranch in Mendocino is distinctly “right-bank” in style. This is where value in red wines resides, delivering true Bordeaux qualities that Napa winemakers love to hyperbolize in their sales pitches. Green peppercorns, stewed plums, pencil shavings, mulberries, and bitter cocoa nibs. Barely a hint of ripeness on the nose, but the palate is oh-so plush and light, with a streak of acidity like a blackberry with multiple red drupelets.
