Here’s one for wine geeks: the grape is Malvasía Volcánica, an obscure variant that’s now only grown on the island of Lanzarote. As the name suggests, the soils are volcanic and difficult – up to 7m deep – formed by an eruption in the 1700s. The result is a fresh, floral, aromatic nose of grapes, green apples, pears, jasmine, and honeysuckle followed by a tingly, spicy, grainy palate, with the acidity balancing the wine’s natural richness.
