Antonio Vallana Gattinara 2010
The Alto Piemonte has subtle differences from the two Langhe powerhouses: more granite and iron rich soil, longer barrel aging requirements (24 months), more extreme weather, Bonarda and Vespolina can be added, and they call the Nebbiolo Spanna. This is 100% Spanna and the age has uncovered layers of white truffle, old leather boots, baking spices, and a touch of caramel. Lots of tertiary flavors with the acid only registering medium intensity at this point. A true delight.
