Back Room Wines is really pleased to be able to offer you the second vintage from Anthill Farms Winery.
We loved Anthill's first vintage (their 2004s), and judging by your enthusiasm and repeated
orders, you loved them too. This is a collaboration between three talented young men who really love wine: Anthony Filiberti, Dave Low, and Webster Marquez. They share a love of great of Pinot Noir and handcraft it in small lots from several different primo North Coast vineyards.
Their philosophy on grape growing is simple. Whether they are managing the farming in a vineyard or working with growers in Sonoma and Mendocino counties, they combine meticulous farming practices with minimal ecological impact. Winemaking is very “hands off” with natural yeast fermation, gentle handling of the grapes and definitely more fruit sensations than oak. The Anthill Farms wines all express a clear sense of place. Not only do these wines have heart, they got soul, brother.
We have four fantastic wines that we are showcasing from Anthill Farms 2005 release. There are three delicious Pinot Noirs and a rich, Northern Rhone style Syrah. Try just one, or all four to really get a sense of what this exciting boutique producer is all about. Production for all four wines combined amounts to a mere 870 cases. With such tiny production, Back Room Wines is one of the very few retailers to be able to offer you these special wines, which is nice.
ANTHILL FARMS PINOT NOIR “Tina Marie Vineyard” Russian River Valley 2005 ($50 net)
"Tina Marie" is drinking the richest, ripest and most typically California-like right now. This is Russian River fruit, which is best known for silky Pinots, and that it is. It's ripe too, with kirsch and allspice flavors jumping to the forefront. For a richer Pinot Noir to drink sooner or later, Tina Marie is the one.
200 cases made.
ANTHILL FARMS PINOT NOIR “Demuth Vineyard”
Anderson Valley 2005 ($45 net)
The "Demuth Vineyard" is the one to age in this Pinot group. The vineyard, which yields only ¾ of a ton per acre, makes a Pinot of structure and complexity. Probably the best Pinot in the long-run, it ain't strutting its stuff quite yet. We think it'll get down with its bad self starting in 2009. The wine has more primary base notes, bigger tannins, and is dark and rich, with big flavors of dark cherry and berry, and finishes with a whiff of sea air. 102 cases made.
ANTHILL FARMS SYRAH “Windsor Oaks Vineyard ”
Russian River Valley 2005 ($28)
The "Windsor Oaks Vineyard" was originally planted by Balverne Winery and its winemaker John Kongsgaard in the 70’s and 80’s. The vineyard is studded with gravel and river rock. This wine is rich and very Northern Rhone in style. Aged meat, Bacon, olive and leather combine with dark fruit and bright acid. This is a great dinner wine, served with roasted meats and summer BBQ. 124 cases produced.
ANTHILL FARMS PINOT NOIR “Comptche Ridge Vineyard” Mendocino County 2005 (SOLD OUT)
ANTHILL FARMS “Comptche Ridge” is their first release from this remote, two-acre vineyard located on the cool Mendocino Coast, just east of the town of Mendocino. This is the prettiest, most classic cool climate Pinot of the group, and the Anthill Farms Pinot that we like to drink today. This wine really displays the elegance and grace of cool climate Pinot Noir, with flavors of cherry liqueur, vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon and spice. It's intense (one ton per acre yield will do this). 75 cases made.
